"It is the eye that discovers the mystery of light, not only the moon and the stars and the vast splendours of the Aurora, but the endless changes the earth undergoes under changing lights." - Nan Shepherd, The Living Mountain.
The title of the second issue, ‘The Living Mountain’, is taken from the book of the same title by modernist writer Nan Shepherd. The book is deeply rooted in Nan Shepherd's knowledge of the natural world, and a poetic and philosophical meditation on our place in nature. The barrier between the authors personal history and experience of the landscape blur as she investigates her relationship with both the exterior and interior world.
Inspired by this book, this issue includes material from emerging female artists who discuss some aspect of landscape, environment, physical space or psychic space in their work.
